Galguduud Region: A Brief Overview

Galguduud is a region in central Somalia with an estimated population of over 765,000 people. It is bordered by the regions of Galmudug, Mudug, Hiran, and Ethiopia to the west. The two main rivers in this region are the Shabelle and Dawa.

Geography and Climate

Galguduud is situated on a plateau, with the highest point being Mount Shimbiris which rises about 2,416 meters above sea level. The region covers an area of about 25,000 square kilometers.

The climate in Galguduud is arid to semi-arid, with temperatures ranging from 20-36°C. The annual rainfall is about 300-600 millimeters received in two seasons, the Gu (April-June) and Deyr (October-December).

Economy and Natural Resources

The economy of Galguduud is mainly based on agriculture and pastoralism. The fertile soil, combined with the availability of water from the two main rivers, has made it possible for farmers to grow crops like maize, sorghum, and sesame. Livestock such as camels, goats, and sheep are also reared in large numbers.

The natural resources in Galguduud include limestone, gypsum, and oil deposits. However, exploitation of these resources has been limited due to insecurity and lack of investment.

Culture and Traditions

The people of Galguduud are mainly Halimo and Marehan clans belonging to the larger Hawiye tribe. Islam is the predominant religion practiced in the region, and the people are traditionally nomadic pastoralists who move around with their livestock in search of water and grazing land.

The region is home to several historic sites, including ancient cave paintings and archaeological ruins such as the city of El Amud.
